10 Most Important Interview Questions Asked to BA
Business Analyst often asked tricky questions in their job interviews. Most of the interview questions are scenario based and in this article I have tried to highlight such important questions which could be asked in your next Business Analyst interview. Before I go ahead with listing all interview questions, you may like to read my previous article on Top 20 Interview Questions asked to Business Analysts .
In this article, I will try to list most common yet tricky questions and how one can try to answer smartly. So, without wasting any time, let’s get started.
1. Tell me about the time when you had to take the decision? And what were the scenario and decision?
Being a Business Analyst, you would have come across some situations where you had take decision. No matter whether your decision was small or bigger but try to explain in detail and in proper order. You can use STAR technique i.e. Situation, Task, Action, and Result.
2. What are the documents have you prepared as a Business Analyst?
Business Analyst prepares and manages many documents like Business Requirement Document, Functional Requirement Document, Use Case etc. You should prepare well and check the job description before going for the interview. 3. How do you manage to handle the User Conflicts with requirements?
It totally depends on the individual i.e. how well you know your user or stakeholders. Generally, you can resolve by having a small meeting either one to one or you can invite them together. You can also explain some real time example in your current organization. Answer with example helps to make the interviewer believe you. 🙂
4. How do you evaluate existing process? Or what technique do you use to evaluate existing process?
Business Analyst evaluates the existing process by reviewing current business process, reviewing business documents, doing impact analysis and GAP analysis. Mostly it’s done by creating AS-IS and TO-Be process because it helps to understand the GAP. After the analysis, an evaluation could be performed by using SWOT Analysis.
5. What was your recent most challenging or complex project?
This is a bit tricky, here interviewer is looking for your approach towards the critical projects. Project challenge could be anything i.e. tight budget, team size or high business impact. Explain with some examples which highlight your intelligence and ability to take a smart decision quickly. Common project challenges could be handled by maintaining the good relationship with stakeholder, proper prioritization of task, communication with stakeholder or well project planning.
6. What is the difference between Business Rule and Business Validation?
Business Rules are the core rule or regulation which should be considered while making any change, enhancement or deletion. And Business validation is the procedure of measuring or assessing business in terms of its market impact or value. Business Validation occurs when the product has been delivered to the client in the test environment i.e. user acceptance testing. It is an act of verifying if the product is designed and developed as intended to.
7. How do you prioritize your requests?
It depends on individuals. Usually, I don’t set priority for the request of my own. I put all request in front of my business and ask them to prioritize. This approach makes the stakeholder happy and it is our goal isn’t it? However, it depends on you and you can always explain what you personally use to prioritize your work.
8. How do you manage missing requirements after taking BRD or SRS sign off?
There is no standard answer to this question. The sometimes additional requirement could be taken a new change request and sometimes business analyst convinced the business or client to take the new request/changes to the next phase of the project.
9. What are your significant project achievements?
Explain your project achievement from a Business Analyst perspective. It could be anything like, controlled the business requirements, avoided rework, improved or automated existing process, eliminated the user conflicts, managed the defect tracking in UAT etc. Explain everything which can highlight your expertise in Business Analysis profession.
10. How would you transform the Business Requirement in Functional Requirement?
Business Requirement document tells the business need and it not necessary explains the solution for the business need. When you prepare a Business Requirement document, you focus only on the business need. Functional Requirement document, on the other hand, explains the solution approach to the business need. One can simply mention the solution for each business need in Functional Requirement document. This is just an example, explain your approach for transforming business requirement in functional requirement.
